“Beat Diabetes,” a thematic exhibition timed to the World Diabetes Day, is open in the international organizations’ room (207g), from November 13 to December 2.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. It is marked every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

The resolution also encouraged Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes in line with the sustainable development of their health-care systems.

Diabetes is a serious medical and social problem of the 21st century. The increasing prevalence of this disease is a real threat throughout the world. According to the World Diabetes Federation, more than 425 million people in the world live with diabetes. Experts note that diabetes prevalence is increasing 5–7% per year in all countries, and every 15 years their number doubles. According to forecasts, in 2040 there will be 642 million people affected with diabetes, including 540 thousand children under the age of 14.

About 4 million people die of diabetes worldwide every year. Diabetes as a cause of mortality takes 3rd place in the world after atherosclerosis and cancer. The disease increases the mortality rate by 2–3 times and shortens life expectancy.

The World Diabetes Day is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight. The theme for diabetes World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is Family and Diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation is raising awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected, and promoting the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.

In Belarus, the World Diabetes Day is initiated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, taking into account the recommendations of WHO and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). As of January 1, 2018, 319 756 people are affected with diabetes in our country. Over the past 20 years, the number has increased 3 times, namely 8–10% per year. The treatment strategy in Belarus is traditionally based on international documents in the field of diabetes. A number of regulatory documents governing the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients with diabetes have been adopted.

The exhibition presents about 60 books, brochures and periodicals in Russian and English.

Subject areas:

  • International Health Recommendations and Standards, WHO
  • Diabetes: diagnosis, treatment, prevention
  • Health and diabetes measures in the Republic of Belarus
