International Day of Persons with Disabilities

In 1992 the General Assembly proclaimed December 3 the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.




In Belarus, according to the order of the President of the Republic of Belarus this day is proclaimed the Day of Disabled Persons of the Republic of Belarus. 

Among us live people who deserve not only compassion, but first of all help and rights to dignity, work and rest. Today in Belarus live 511,5 thousand persons with disabilities, among them 27,4 thousand children under eighteen.  

National Library of Belarus is fitted up with special equipment to provide the access to its resources for people with disabilities.  There are ramps, particular checkroom with a low stand, and elevators for persons with locomotor system disturbances.  

The general reading room and certificated specialists reading room are fitted up with hoists for wheelchairs. The Library disposes of special equipment for visually impaired persons: individual work places fitted up with magnifying glass, speech-to-text software in Russian and English languages, Braille display, reader, and headphones.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
