A Journey to the Diamond of Knowledge

Charity event at the National Library of Belarus

On January 20, within the framework of the republican New Year charity event "Our Children", the library was visited by children of the Andreevsky Orphanage of Orsha district, Vitebsk region.

The acquaintance with Minsk and its sights, a stroll along wide avenues, a visit to the circus and a journey to the "Diamond"... Such a varied program was prepared for the young guests from the Andreevsky Orphanage, assigned to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus, while visiting the capital.

In the National Library the children had a fascinating tour, during which they twisted a granite ball making wishes at the fountain, jumped on the glass floor checking it for strength, and found their native Vitebsk region on huge art panels. Also they learned how to order publications from the repository and watched the books "skating" through the library on the tele-lift.

In the Book Museum, the children were greeted by the deputy director of the National Library of Belarus for research and publishing, Alexander Susha. He told about the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book-printing, which we widely celebrated last year, and presented them books about the famous first-printer, Francysk Skaryna. Besides, the National Library donated about 400 editions to the Andreevsky Orphanage, including developing books, fiction, popular science and educational literature for children and young adults.

The journey continued with the acquaintance with the museum exhibits: a book-baby and a giant book, a scroll book and the oldest manuscripts. The last point of the route was the observation tower, where from the height of 73 meters the kids could see Minsk in full view.

We hope that this fascinating journey to the National Library has left pleasant memories to the children, and each of them will certainly return here again to touch the treasury of knowledge!
