From 15 October to 13 November, an exhibition "The UN for peace and prosperity of the peoples", dedicated to the Day of the United Nations, runs in the Official Documents Division (room 207).


This Day was proclaimed on 31 October, 1947 at the 2nd session of the UN General Assembly (resolution № 168). It has being annually celebrated on 24 October since 1948. It is the day when the UN Charter entered into force on 1945, and in 1971 , the General Assembly recommended that all Member States observe it as a public holiday (resolution 2782 (XXVI)).

Celebrating United Nations Day is a reminder that our planet is our common home, and that through inclusive dialogue and collaboration can solve the existing problems. Traditionally meetings, discussions and exhibits on the objectives of the UN and its achievements are held on this day around the world.

The United Nations is a unique international organization established to maintain peace and security throughout the world, to development friendly relations among nations and promote social progress. The current members of the United Nations is 192 Member States. Membership to the United Nations is open to all peaceful states, and it is carried out by the decision of the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council.

The UN activities are multifaceted, and it covers a wide range of important issues facing humanity. This activity is a joint effort of more than 30 affiliated organizations that make up the UN system. The United Nations and other organizations of its system work to promote human rights, environmental protection, disease control, development, and poverty reduction. The United Nations agencies define the standards for safe and efficient air and sea, help improve telecommunications and enhance consumer protection, promote respect for intellectual property rights. The United Nations also leads the international campaigns against drug trafficking and terrorism. Its activities in such fields as peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance are successful and well-known. The UN works for the good of the Planet and all working people/ as well as for all peoples of the world.

Belarus was one of the founders of the UN. Our country was among 51 states – founders of the United Nations. Cooperation between Belarus and the United Nations is one of the priorities of foreign policy of our country. The Belarusian delegation is constantly involved in regular and special sessions of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and other UN key bodies. Belarus has being always tried to take an active role within the UN on critical issues and problems of the international agenda and make a real contribution to solving these problems. The UN Office in Belarus became working in 1992, the Community Office in Belarus includes 11 agencies, funds and programs of the UN system.

The exhibition includes more than 100 documents from the NLB in Russian and English: books, periodicals, the UN mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.

The exhibition consists of the following sections:

  • UN: Past and Present.
  • Human Rights.
  • International law.
  • Humanitarian issues.
  • Maintenance of international peace and security.
  • Economic and social development.
  • The UN and the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition is designed for specialists in the field of international law and international relations, political scientists, students and educators, and anyone who is interested in the activities of the UN.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
