An exhibition “The poet of bronze and stone” timed to the 170th birthday of French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) runs at reading room 307 from November 12 to December 13.

The work by one of the greatest and most influential representatives of European art of the XIX-XX centuries, one of founders of impressionism in sculpture, was fluctuating, as he confessed himself, between the harmony of antique sculptures, with their still perfection of forms and the severe greatness of Michelangelo full of a passionate struggle.

One of the master’s crucial works, “The Gates of Hell”, is an enormous relief of bronze inspired by Dante’s characters. The separate groups of sculptures gain an independent existence – “Thinker”, “Kiss”, “Shadow”, ‘Adam”, Eve”, “Danaid”.

The sculptor’s name invariably associates with the theme of love that is presented in the central part of the exhibition. Rodin had glorified the beauty of human body and the poetry of love in his famous works “Kiss”, “Eternal Spring”, “Toilette De Venus”, “Romeo and Juliet”.

The master’s talent shows in sculpture portraits as well. The exhibition presents the pictures of his most famous works – “Balzac”, “The Portrait of Victor Hugo”, “Thought”.

Rodin’s works exerted a great influence on modern art putting an end to the period of stagnation in sculpture art and recreating it as a means of expression of the inner world of a person.

The exhibition presents albums, books, articles and postcards with the works by the celebrated sculptor.  The exposition is designed for all who is interested in Auguste Rodin’s biography and art.
