Form March 18th to April 7th in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205) is open a book exhibition "The knight of a ballad” dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Belarusian poet Victor Shnip.


Victor Shnip started his literary career in the late 1970s – 1980s and proved at once his lustrous creative talent. His works are remarkable for a wide variety of subjects and genres. He is the author of publicistic, philosophic, lyrical and landscape poems, and also numerous ballads. The poet has stayed devoted to the genre of ballad during his whole literary career, and this very genre has revealed the originality and richness of his creative thinking. Using the form of ballad, Victor Shnip has created a vast poetic gallery of outstanding figures of the past and present of Belarus.

The sincere and melodic poetry of Victor Shnip has inspired Belarusian composers (D. Evtukhovich and others). Dozens of songs has been created on the basis of his poems – “The Song of Renaissance”, “Kalezhanka”, “Mother of the Daughter-in-Law”, “Om a Visit” etc. Researchers of the lyrics by Victor Shnip say that the poet has influenced upon the classical Belarusian romance and has imparted to it the European style and vividness.

Critics and researchers of modern Belarusian literature highly appreciate the works of Victor Shnip and welcome every new book of the poet.

The anniversary exhibition presents books of collected poems and stories by Victor Shnip, including “Bunches of Light” (1983), “In Search of Joy” (1987), “Following the Way of Wind” (1990), “Red Lantern” (2000) , “Inquisition” (2000), “Belarusian Sea” (2004), “Ballad of Stones” (2006), “Arrow of Love, Cross of Love” (2008), and also separate works included in books of collected poems and scientific papers on the poet’s creative activity.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
