A book-illustrative exhibition "The history in colors" dedicated to the 210th anniversary of the birth of Napoleon Orda runs in the Fine arts reading room (306), from 1 to 27 February.
The artist, composer, pianist, educator, social activist, writer, scholar and master of architectural landscape Napoleon Orda (1807–1883) lived and worked in the difficult period of history and was an active participant in tragic and tumultuous events. On the example of his work you can create a vivid portrait of the intelligentsia of the time, and also study the history of Belarus admiring the beauty of the landscape and the panoramas of ancient cities.
Orda created more than a thousand watercolors and graphic works capturing the unique objects of architecture, history and culture related not only to Belarus, but also the heritage of other countries, such as Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Algeria etc.
A tireless traveler, Napoleon Orda depicted castles and palaces, churches and chapels, ruins and fortresses, as well as the estates of famous people. The master’s drawings allow us to study the architectural heritage, including the lost. With his work, the artist awakens the interest in the historical past of Belarus and helps to realize and increase the deep sense of patriotism.
The offered exhibition features the album of Napoleon Orda’s drawings Album widokόw przedstawiających miejsca historyczne Księstwa Poznańskiego (2004) presenting the variety of architectural landscapes, and also Belarus in the Drawings of Napoleon Orda (2001) with a series of works depicting monuments of Belarusian architecture.
The album-book of L. Nesterchuk Napoleon Orda. The Way to the Motherland (2009) includes rare photographs, as well as information about the origins of the ancient noble family of the artist.
Also the exposition presents critical essays about Orda where his work is considered in the context of different artistic phenomena: regional, local and historical.
More than 50 documents are on display: albums, reproductions, books, articles, cards and calendars.
The original lithographs of Napoleon Orda published during his lifetime are of undoubted value to Belarus. At present they are stored in the collection of rare publications of the National Library.
