The exhibition "Science for Peace and Development" in the National Library dedicated to the World Day of Science for Peace and Development. It is on show from November 4 to December 6 in the Document of International Organizations Reading Room (2nd floor, room 207g).

This day was established at the 31st session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2001 (document 31C/56) and is celebrated annually on 10 November since 2002.

The idea for World Science Day for Peace and Development came from the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest, Hungary, convened by UNESCO and the World Science Council. The participants of the conference declared that such an event would reaffirm the annual commitment of the goals of the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge and promote the implementation of the recommendations of the Science Agenda, the Framework for Action.

World Science Day for Peace and Development is constituted to highlight the importance of science in society and the need for the general public to engage in the discussion of emerging scientific issues. This Day also highlights the importance and relevance of science to everyday life.

World Science Day for Peace and Development Goals:

  • To raise public awareness of the role of science for the peaceful and sustainable development of society;
  • To encourage national and international solidarity to share scientific advances across countries;
  • To renew national and international commitment to the use of science for the benefit of society;
  • To draw attention to the challenges facing science, as well as to increase support for scientific activities.

The development of science in the Republic of Belarus is comprehensively supported by the state. There are about 340 research organizations and almost 25,000 scientists, graduate students and doctoral students in the country today. The results of the Belarusian scientists' work meet high world requirements, are actively used in all sectors of the national economy and social sphere of the country, make a significant contribution to solving the problems of innovative development of the state. The country has created conditions for the implementation of creative initiatives, pays considerable attention to the development of scientific schools, attracting young people to them. The achievements of Belarusian scientists in various fields of fundamental and applied research are recognized worldwide.

The exhibition presents about 80 documents revealing the history of development and today's realities of national and world science. These are encyclopedic and reference publications, monographs, periodicals, collections of scientific works, materials of international and national conferences and symposiums in Russian, English and French. Most of the exhibition consists of documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, European Union, Council of Europe, etc.).

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • world trends, problems and prospects for the development of sciences in modern society;
  • science and innovative development of society;
  • science and education;
  • international cooperation and activities of international organizations in the field of science;
  • state and prospects for the development of science in the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition will be useful for research workers, sociologists, economists, specialists in the field of technical, humanitarian, natural sciences, as well as teachers and university students.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
