A jubilee exhibition timed to the 150th birth anniversary of Belarusian composer and folklorist Nicolay Churkin runs in the Music and audiovisual documents reading room (305), from May 14 to June 11.

People’s Artist of Belarus Nicolay Churkin (1869–1964) left an indelible mark on the history of Belarusian musical culture. He is known as one of the founders of Belarusian professional music, the founder of the national symphony and the author of the first Belarusian opera. During his long creative career, the composer wrote dozens of musical works including 2 operas, 3 symphonies, 2 musical comedies, 11 string quartets, vocal compositions, suites, and also music for dramatic performances.

Nicolay Churkin collected folklore and recorded and processed more than 3,000 folk songs and dances. Many works of the composer are based on Belarusian folklore. Nicolay Churkin’s works are notable for optimism and bright melodies, classical compositions, clear forms and the use of melodic-rhythmic features and performing techniques of Belarusian folk music.

The exhibition presents musical compilations of Belarusian folk songs and dances adapted by Nicolay Churkin, as well as musical editions of the composer's works, including pieces for the string quartet, suites, operas, pieces for piano and violin, numerous compositions based on the poems by Yakub Kolas, Yanka Kupala, Pyatro Glebka and other Belarusian poets.

The audio documents presented at the exposition are available for playing: the symphonietta Belorusskiye kartinki, the play for violin and piano Kalykhanka, the songs Ty pryydzi and Nad rakoy (lyrics by Yanka Kupala), etc.

Publications about the composer’s life and work are also on display.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
