The thematic exhibition "All about Diabetes" dedicated to the World Diabetes Day is open from November 8 to December 5 in the hall of documents of international organizations (room 207g).

For the first time this day was celebrated on November 14, 1991 by the joint efforts of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization. The date was chosen in recognition of the merits of one of the discoverers of insulin – Canadian scientist Frederick Bunting, who was born on November 14, 1891. For this discovery, together with other scientists, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923.

On November 20, 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted resolutio A/RES/61/225, in which the rapid increase in the incidence of diabetes was declared an extraordinary threat to the entire world community. The Assembly decided to celebrate World Diabetes Day annually under the auspices of the United Nations since 2007.

The exhibition, offered to the attention of users, has about 70 documents in Russian and English – books, periodicals, booklets revealing the activities of the World Health Organization, the International Diabetes Federation and other organizations aimed at raising awareness of the population about diabetes and its complications.

The exposition will acquaint the reader with this serious medical and social problem of the XXI century, with programs and strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, as well as a set of measures that are being taken at the international and national levels to prevent the development of this disease.

Among the documents presented at the exhibition are monographs, encyclopedias and reference books, practical manuals and guides for diabetics on dietary nutrition, etc.

The exposition includes the following thematic sections:

  • Diabetes: diagnosis, treatment, prevention
  • Nutrition for diabetes mellitus
  • Health protection and measures aimed at combating diabetes in Belarus

The exhibition will be useful to healthcare professionals, medical professionals, researchers, teachers, students of higher educational institutions, as well as anyone interested in healthy lifestyle issues and measures aimed at preventing diabetes and its complications.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes is a real threat worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Federation for 2021, more than 537 million people in the world are living with diabetes. Experts note that the incidence increases annually in all countries by 5-7%, and every 15 years the number of diabetic patients doubles, therefore, the catastrophic increase in the number of cases takes on the character of a non-infectious epidemic.

The theme of the World Diabetes Day in 2021-2023 is dedicated to access to diabetes treatment. 100 years after the discovery of insulin, millions of people with diabetes cannot receive the care and support they need to manage their condition and avoid complications.

In our country, World Diabetes Day is held on the initiative of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, taking into account the recommendations of WHO and the International Diabetes Federation. As of January 1, 2022, there were more than 360.5 thousand patients with diabetes mellitus registered in Belarus.
