New Exhibition Project – "FASHION-Illustration" (+video)

The opening of the exhibition "FASHION-Illustration" will take place in the Atrium of the National Library (2nd floor) on 27th January.

The exhibition is part of the annual exhibition project "History and Modernity of Book Graphics" and it will present the history of fashion illustration – the art of depicting fashion ideas in visual form.

The viewers will see:

  • Facsimile editions of chronicles of the European and Belarusian lands with images of the clothing of that time and collections of family portraits of the higher ranks of society;
  • 18th- and 19th-century fashion – Original engravings with images of women's and men's costumes, the best fashion magazines from European and Russian publishers;
  • Twentieth-century fashion looks – works by the famous Bakst and Erté, albums of fashion houses and magazines from the USSR and BSSR publishing houses, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire and Elle magazines popular all over the world with images of stylish models by Gabrielle Chanel, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent;
  • Impressive and sensual watercolours by the Belarusian fashion-illustrator Veranika Talieckaja;
  • Creative works by students of the Fashion Design Subdepartment of the Department of Sociocultural Communication of the Belarusian State University.

A collection of clothes by creative tandem Volha Dejka (Jezhevika brand) and Belarusian artist Aliaksandr Niekrashevich will be of interest to visitors. The theme of fashion and art interpenetration will be elaborated by other members of the Belarusian Chamber of Fashion from various regions of Belarus – talented fashion designers Taciana Jafremava, Tamara Harydovec, Kaciaryna Buter.

The large-scale exhibition will be complemented by items from the personal collection of Ihar Surmacheuski, detailed reconstructions of the headwear by Hanna Jukhnavec and dolls by Maryja Shkuratava in costumes from the corresponding period.

The exhibition project FASHION-Illustration through a retrospective display of periodicals and graphic material will help not only to trace the development and change of fashion trends from antiquity to the present, but also to introduce the features of artistic creation and presentation of fashion images from different ages and different countries, as well personalities who have left their mark on the world and domestic fashion and fashion illustration.

Please, note! On the opening day only, visitors will have the rare opportunity to see a collection of engravings of fashion from around the world in the original 16th-century edition (1590), illustrated by the Italian artist and engraver Cesare Vecellio.

Everybody is welcome!

Admission is free on the event day. On other days, admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.

The project is on show until 22nd May.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
