On 19 May, the National Library hosted the presentation of the six volume encyclopedia Culture of Belarus of the publishing house “Bielaruskaja encyklapiedyja imia Piatrusia Broǔki” (“The Belarusian encyclopedia named after Piatrus Broǔka).
The preservation of cultural heritage is a complex and laborious process. Today, when society manifests increasing interest in the national history and culture, the appearance of unique publications such as the encyclopedia Culture of Belarus is very appropriate.
The work on this great project has lasted seven years. Over 15 thousand articles contain information about various aspects of Belarusian culture, famous Belarusians, modern professional and amateur groups, festivals. The six-volume publication opens new milestones in the history of Belarusian culture and offers a fresh perspective on the distinctive and rich cultural heritage of the country.
The event was attended by First Deputy Minister of Information of Belarus Ihar Lucki. He expressed gratitude to the scientists, architects and art historians who have made a great contribution to the encyclopedia edition. The result of seven years of their collaboration is a fundamental and important issue – the folio of Belarusian culture.
Deputy Minister of Culture of Belarus Vasil Černik stressed that it was very important to present the publication in the Year of Culture. Many of the articles are published for the first time and dedicated to folk art, reflecting the richness and originality of Belarusian culture.
“More than 600 prominent researchers and scientists, promoting our country among the best, have made every effort to create the country’s passport – the encyclopedia Culture of Belarus”, director of the publishing house Bielaruskaja encyklapiedyja imia Piatrusia Broǔki Aliaksandr Karliukievič said. He expressed gratitude to the staff of the publishing house for the great work, the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Culture for their support and assistance. As a sign of respect Aliaksandr Karliukievič presented to the National Library of Belarus six volumes of the encyclopedia.
Director of the National Library of Belarus Raman Matulski thanked them for a significant fundamental work and noted with satisfaction that most of the writers who had worked on the publication were users and visitors of the National Library. Therefore we can assume that library staff had contributed to the publication of the encyclopedia by specifying each date, number and event.
The event was also visited by deputy chair of the Belarusian Fund of Culture Tadevuš Stružecki and chair of the Belaruian Union of Arts and Crafts Jaǔhen Sachuta.
The presentation ended with a performance of the honored amateur band of ancient music "Pastoral" under the direction of Iryna Lukjanava. Authentic music reminded everyone of the richness and originality of Belarusian culture, which has deep historical roots and requires careful treatment and support from the Belarusian people.
