On August 12, 2009, at National Library of Belarus was held a press-conference dedicated to the handing to the Library a collection of unique manuscripts, incunabula, Belarusian periodicals and maps from British-American Tobacco Trading Company.
The event was part of a charitable campaign “Rare publications for Belarusian treasury”.
Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Belarus V.I. Kurash, Chairman of Belarusian Fund of Culture V.A. Gilep, and Head of corporate relations department of British-American Tobacco Trading Company S.N. Buryi delivered welcoming speeches.
The Library has obtained 18 rare books, 3 maps and 3 periodicals. According to experts, the collection is an important contribution to the cause of safekeeping of national documentary heritage and interesting to researchers for its scientific significance.
The most valuable are seven ancient manuscripts – hagiographies, missals and psalms – created by Belarusian Old Believers in the XVIII–XIX centuries. There are as well unique handwritten missals of the second quarter of the XIX century. The Library users will get all the rare books obtained by the Library in manuscripts, incunabula and rare book reading room.
