On 30 October, a solemn opening of Yuri Yakovenko’s exhibition "The Kingdom of Solomon" organized by the National Library of Belarus and the gallery "Book Salon" was held at the gallery "Labyrinth


The exposition represents more than 100 etchings made by the artist from 2007 to 2013. There are

displayed the whole series of bookplates "Tarot" and "Runes". Folders with engravings "Alphabet", "Condottieri", "Icarus", "The Four Elements", as well as some exclusive, handmade books as the most valuable objects are exhibited in the Book Museum of the National Library of Belarus. Here visitors can see Yakovenko’s original engraving "Riders" which has been used in the design of the gift edition of Vladimir Korotkevich’s novel King Stakh’s Wild Hunt.

At the event, First Deputy Director of the National Library of Belarus Elena Dolgopolova told about various art projects with the participation of Yuri Yakovenko which had been realized within the walls of the institution and about the books which had been published with his art works.

"The opening of the exhibition today is a very important event for me as it ends a series of presentations of the edition "The Song of King Solomon" released in Italian and English. Especially as I have created many works that can be shown to the audience. It was scary to begin but for two years I have managed to do a lot of engravings. Some of these works are included in the edition, and some – not," said the artist Yuri Yakovenko.

Chairman of the Belarusian Artists’ Union Gregory Sitnitsa said that he was very happy to see the presentation of the renowned artist’s works in the National Library of Belarus. "It is an intellectual feast of very high cultural level. Yuri Yakovenko’s creativity is a national pride," he said.

Yuri Yakovenko was born in Primorsky Krai in 1965. In 1992, he graduated from the Belarusian State Academy of Arts. Since 1994, he has been a member of the Belarusian Artists’ Union, and 13 years later he became a member of the International Club "Graphic House" (Sweden). Today the artist lives and works in Grodno.

One-artist solo shows were held in numerous galleries in Belarus, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, China, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Sweden. Yuri Yakovenko’s works are kept in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Museum of Modern Fine Art in Minsk, the Grodno State History and Archeology Museum, the Polotsk Art Gallery, the Vatican Library, the Graphics Room of the Royal Council in Sweden, the rooms of engravings and drawings in Museo Civico and Della Carta (Italy), the museum D.Almondi (Spain), municipal museums in Germany and Denmark, and others.

The exhibition runs in the gallery "Labyrinth" of the Library and in the Book Museum till 1 December, 2014.
