Catalogs and card indexes

The National Library of Belarus has the following catalogs and card files at present time:

ALPHABETICAL CATALOGS

General alphabetical catalog represents collections of books (from 1800 to today), brochures, albums, atlases, collected works, dissertations and authors’ abstracts of dissertations, microfiches of dissertations (from 1987 to 1992), and electronic resources. Besides that, the catalog represents bibliographical records of particular prints from collected works, journals and series (collections of materials published before WW2), particular issues of journals and series having particular headings, and a part of general summary bibliographical record of series.

General alphabetical catalog in Russian language consists of three sections:
  1. Author’s (bibliographical records of persons’-individual authors’ names arranged alphabetically);
  2. Headings of materials (bibliographical records of headings of materials arranged alphabetically);
  3. Name of an organization (bibliographical records of names of organizations).

General alphabetical catalog in foreign languages includes bibliographical records of materials in foreign languages including materials published in Belarus, Russia, and the USSR and abroad in all languages (materials of the 15-19th centuries are represented in book science department alphabetical catalog).The catalog represents the following kinds of materials: books, maps, particular prints from collected works, journals and series having particular headings, and electronic resources.

Bibliographical records of headings of materials, persons’ names, and names of organizations are arranged alphabetically.
Readers’ alphabetical catalog of books in foreign languages is arranged by language (in alphabet of languages). The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

CLASSIFIED CATALOGS

General classified catalog (chronological comprehension: materials acquired by the Library from 2005 to today) represents materials in Cyrillic alphabet, Roman alphabet, and other alphabets. The catalog is arranged according to the UDC tables. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

General classified catalog (chronological comprehension: from 1800 to 2004) represents materials in Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian, and other languages of peoples of member countries of the CIS.The catalog is arranged according to the UDC tables. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

General classified catalog of foreign and national publications in foreign languages (chronological comprehension: from the 15th century to 2004) represents materials in different languages. The catalog is arranged according to the UDC tables. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

General classified catalog of map materials (chronological comprehension: from 1927 to 2004) represents map materials in Belarusian and Russian languages. The catalog is arranged according to the Library and Bibliographical Classification (LBC) tables. Map materials acquired by the Library after 2005 are represented in General classified catalog (new section). Map materials in foreign languages acquired by the Library before 2004 are represented inGeneral classified catalog of foreign and national publications in foreign languages (chronological comprehension: from the 15th century to 2004). Classified catalog of dissertations defended in the Republic of Belarus (chronological comprehension: from 1994 to today) represents dissertations in Belarusian and Russian languages. The catalog is arranged according to the nomenclature. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Classified catalog of microfiches of dissertations (chronological comprehension: from 1987 to 1992) represents collections of dissertations in Russian language defended in the USSR on micro media. The catalog is arranged according to the nomenclature. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Classified catalog of authors’ abstracts of dissertations (chronological comprehension: from 1955 to 1999) represents materials in Belarusian and Russian languages.Part of the catalog representing publications from 1955 to 1972 is arranged according to an alphabet of sciences, the other part representing publications from 1973 to 1999 is arranged according to the nomenclature.The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Classified catalog of music (chronological comprehension: from the end of the 18th century to 1993) represents printed music in Belarusian, Russian, and foreign languages. The catalog is arranged according to the LBC tables. The catalog is located in music and audio materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 305.

Classified catalog of audio materials (chronological comprehension: from 1959 to 1993) represents vinyl discs, CD, and audio cassettes. The catalog is located in music and audio materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 305.

SUBJECT CATALOGS

Subject catalog of books (chronological comprehension: from 1945 to 2002) represents books and particular issues of series having particular headings. The catalog is arranged according to an alphabet of subject headings in Russian language. The catalog is located in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Subject catalog of graphic materials (chronological comprehension: from 1976 to 1995) represents albums, postcards, posters, reproductions, photos, engravings, and selected analytical lists of illustrative materials from books and graphic materials. The catalog is arranged according to an alphabet of subject headings. The catalog is located in graphic and video materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 306.

CARD INDEXES

Classified card indexes of articles represent articles from national and foreign journals, collected works, and series on social sciences and humanities from 1980 to 2005 (economy and law – from 2000 to 2005). The card indexes are arranged according to the UDC tables. The card indexes are in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Classified card indexes of persons represent articles and partly books, authors’ abstracts of dissertations, and dissertations on persons related to Belarus in Belarusian, Russian, and foreign languages from the 19th century to today. The card indexes are in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Topographic card indexes represent articles and partly books, authors’ abstracts of dissertations, dissertations, and maps in Belarusian, Russian, and foreign languages from 1850 to today on the history and the modern state of particular regions and geographical objects of Belarus and relations between Belarus and other countries. The card indexes are arranged according to the Standard scheme of classification of materials for local lore catalogs (card indexes) of libraries of the Republic of Belarus. Classified local lore card indexes represent articles on Belarus from national and foreign journals and newspapers, collected works, and series from the early 1960s to 2004. The card indexes are arranged according to the UDC tables. The card indexes are in catalogs reading room (central part of the Library) on the second floor.

Subject card indexes of music and audio records represent music, vinyl discs, CD, and audiocassettes from the end of the 19th century to 1995. The card indexes are arranged according to an alphabet of subject headings. The card indexes are located in music and audio materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 305.

Card indexes of authors of texts informs on fiction which are texts of musical works or were used as a plot for a musical composition. The card indexes represent music from the end of the 18th century to 1995. The card indexes are located in music and audio materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 305.

Card indexes of headings of vocal works represent music from the end of the19th century to 1995. The card indexes are located in music and audio materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 305.

Card indexes of portraits are designed for the search for portraits of the eminent figures performed in sculpture, graphic, painting, and photos from 1900 to today. The card indexes represent particular reproductions, reproductions from books, albums, sets of postcards, covers of vinyl discs and printed music, as well as selected analytical lists of books and graphic materials from 1900 to today. The card indexes are located in graphic and video materials reading room, the 3rd floor, room 306.

Subject card indexes of mimeographed materials of the UNO and the OSCE represent documents (mastheads) of the UNO, its offices, and the OSCE in Russian, English, and French languages. Chronological comprehension: from 1994 to today. The card indexes are arranged according to an alphabet of subject headings.
