Teacher's Day is not only an occasion to congratulate teachers and celebrate their contribution to education, but also to think about how to provide them with the support necessary for the full disclosure of their talent and vocation, as well as to rethink further ways of developing the profession on a global scale.
The historical background for the establishment of this holiday was the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers held in Paris on October 5, 1966. As a result, representatives of UNESCO and the International Labour Organization signed the "Recommendation, UNESCO/ILO on the situation of teachers".
The recommendation enshrined the rights and obligations of teachers and international standards concerning their training, advanced training, employment, working conditions and learning process. In 1997, a "Recommendation on the Status of Teaching Staff in Higher Education Institutions" was adopted, complementing the 1966 recommendation by including teaching and research staff in higher education system.
In our country, the Teacher's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of October. This holiday is designated in the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No.157 of March 26, 1998 "On public holidays, holidays and memorable dates in the Republic of Belarus".
This is the most beautiful and kind professional holiday, when teachers receive congratulations from present pupils and former ones, as well as from their parents. Various festive events are held in schools all over the country on this day. Teachers are congratulated with sweets, flowers and gifts.
