The city of Brest (Berestye) was first mentioned in The Tale of Bygone Years (1019) as the trade and craft center of Kievan Rus. In 1390, Brest received the Magdeburg right and became the first Belarusian city with the privilege of self-government.

The modern look of Brest had been formed for many centuries, combining the architectural features of different styles, eras and cultures.

On its thousandth anniversary, Brest has been declared the 15th cultural capital of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), taking over from the Armenian city of Goris. The regional center of the Republic of Belarus will become a venue for expanding intercultural relations with the CIS countries, gaining even greater fame in the world.

By visiting the exhibition “The Thousand-year Brest, the Cultural Capital of the CIS,” you will learn more about the history and the modern achievements of the regional city. The exposition consists of three thematic sections: “Brest Historical”, “Brest Heroic” and “Brest Modern”, in which more than 60 publications are presented. Fiction and non-fiction, colorful albums with views of the city, catalogs, tourist booklets, and brochures with the images of historical sites and monuments of Brest are on display.

The exposition will be of interest to historians, cultural scientists, bibliologists, bibliographers, as well as those who study the history and spiritual heritage of Belarus.

The exhibition is located on the 3rd floor in the circular corridor and will run from June 20 to December 31, 2019.
