Bowfal, Vladislav

2 Владислав Францевич Боуфал.jpg Vladislav Bowfal(1853–1914) was a major general. Born in smallholders’ family, Grodno province, he graduated from the St. Petersburg infantry cadet school.

He began service as an ensign (1875) in the 16th Infantry Battalion, fought in the Russian-Turkish war (1877–1878) and won military glory in the defense of the Shipka Pass. He reached the ranks of lieutenant (1877), lieutenant (1878), staff captain (1880), captain (1888), lieutenant colonel (1894), colonel (1898), major general (1906).

At the beginning of the First World War, Bowfal led the 4th Infantry Brigade, which proved itself in fight and defense and received the honorary title of “Iron”.

Later he was appointed commander of the 3rd Grenadier Division (1914). From September 1914, due to illness, he was in reserve at the headquarters of Kiev military district. He was posthumously promoted, to rank of lieutenant general (1915).
