On May 23, a solemn assembly of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO was held at the National Library of Belarus.

The anniversary of Belarus joining the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a significant event and a good reason to show the results of this fruitful cooperation.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Igor Petrishenko, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO Vladimir Makei, Deputy Coordinator of the National Commissions of the UNESCO Sector for External Relations and Cooperation Assel Utegenova, as well as representatives of cultural and educational establishments, media and general public.

The event’s guests could see the exhibition “UNESCO and Belarus: 65 Years of Successful Cooperation”. Photos and archival materials from the collections of the Center for the History of the Foreign Ministry and the Belarusian Diplomatic Service, the National Library of Belarus, the publishing house “Chetyre chetverti”, the Belarusian Association of UNESCO Clubs, and the private archives of P.P. Latushko and V.G. Schastny were on display. The exhibition booths provided information on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Belarus.

During the event, the first deputy director of the National Library of Belarus, Elena Dolgopolova, presented the virtual project “UNESCO and Belarus: the Milestones of Cooperation”. The resource available on the official site of the “diamond of knowledge” reveals the most important areas of partnership with the international organization.

The National Library maintains close cooperation with UNESCO since 1956, when it received depositary status. To this day, the main library of Belarus is engaged in the formation, storage and promotion of the collection of documents and publications of UNESCO and its numerous commissions, and takes an active part in the organization’s activities. In 2018, the library was awarded a diploma of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO for a significant contribution to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Belarus and active work in the field of international humanitarian cooperation.
