The Archives and Museums as Institutions of Social Memory International Conference will be held in Minsk, on May 27 and 28.

The organizers are the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, the National Library of Belarus and the Faculty of History of the Belarusian State University.

The scientific and practical event is focused on the discussion of transformations occurring today in archives, libraries and museums. The active development of information technology and the Internet affects not only the forms of communication with users, but also the methods of processing text documents. Responding to the challenges of the time, archives, libraries and museums are transforming, but at the same time they remain important and culture-forming as the institutions of social memory of humanity. The Forum is one of the first events in the Republic of Belarus, organized for a comprehensive review of the problem of documents stored in archives, libraries and museums.

The plenary and one of breakout sessions will be held at the National Library of Belarus. The work of the other two sections will be continued at the Faculty of History of the Belarusian State University. The plenary meeting will begin on May 27 at 10.00 in the educational technology hall (3rd floor, room 346).

Over 60 scientists from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Malta will attend the conference. During breakout sessions, participants will scientifically assess the role of archives, libraries and museums in the formation of historical memory. Within two days, the conference will gather in the National Library and the Faculty of History of the Belarusian State University to discuss the following topics:

  • Documentary heritage as an information resource of a society.
  • Digital transformation and memory institutions.
  • Changing requests to online resources of archives, libraries and museums.
  • The problem of relationships between users and keepers of information.
  • Blurring the boundaries of libraries, archives and museums (archives-museums, libraries-archives, libraries-museums, media libraries, etc).
