On April 14th–16th in Moscow took place the V Methodological seminar on the Universal Decimal Code "The Universal Decimal Code as a mean of semantic description of information resources on fundamental scientific problems".
During five years (2006–2010), All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI RAN) has been the major organizer of the seminar. Specialists of the National Library of Belarus traditionally participate in the meetings of Russian professionals on behalf of Belarusian bibliographic community.
This year the National Library of Belarus was represented by Head of the Document Indexing Section N.I. Kovalevskaya who delivered a report “Experience in indexing of documents on fundamental sciences at the National Library of Belarus”. The audience evinced a keen interest in the report.
Within the framework of the seminar, the first organizational session of the Methodological advisory council of UDC users was held. N.I. Kovalevskaya took part in the event.
The seminar covered the current state of the UDC tables as a tool of indexing and scientific information search in conditions of modern information technologies. Participants of the seminar discussed the questions of a technique of use of the UDC indexes during semantic document processing and information search, and familiarized with the automated system of UDC maintenance at All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of Russia, and also with the experience of scientific libraries of Russia in the field of indexing of documents on fundamental sciences.
It is planned to lead a discussion on the results of the seminar at a working meeting of experts of the departments of the National Library of Belarus who specialize in cataloguing (bibliographic document processing, document indexing and the national database of authority records maintenance).
