On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.

On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders, Belarusian culture celebrates another significant anniversary - the 85th anniversary of the birth of the National Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich (14.01.1939 – 31.12.2021).

Vasily Sharangovich is a teacher, one of the founders of the Belarusian school of graphics, a classic of Belarusian fine art, a famous painter, illustrator of more than 60 publications, whose works have raised more than one generation of readers, winner of numerous republican and All-Union awards in the field of book art, including four diplomas of the All-Union competition "Art of the Book" and a medal named after Francisk Skaryna.
The title of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus" is the words of the Belarusian national writer, which have become relevant for Vasily Petrovich: "I have always stood firmly on my native land, which after time God has given me, will take me into its dark embrace, but always, as in the words of Yanka Kupala, I will dream "dreams about Belarus," said the artist. The creative life of Vasily Sharangovich, a man from the people, has always been closely intertwined with the history of the country. As a child, he survived the Great Patriotic War in the occupation, the feelings and emotions of this period eventually turned into a series dedicated to the Khatyn tragedy "Memory of the fiery villages". The exhibition also presents several touching illustrations for Kuzma Chorny's work "Earth", which tells about the events of the war years.

"Dreams about Belarus" are also images from the pages of books. The exhibition features original illustrations to the works of classics of Belarusian literature, folk writers Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas. Vasily Sharangovich's illustrations to the encyclopedia of Belarusian life of the poem "Novaya Zemlya", sincerely lived, felt and conveyed in picturesque subjects, are perceived today in unbreakable unity with the work of Yakub Kolas. The national characters of the heroes, the ethnographic description of Belarusian customs, holidays come to life thanks to the talent of the artist. The piercing, subtle poems of Yanka Kupala "She and I", "Eternal song", "Guslar" are reinterpreted by Vasily Sharangovich: illustrations to the works complement the images of literary heroes, give them sincerity and truthfulness, deep and subtle psychologism. Imbued with the beauty and power of his native land, a series of illustrations to the poem by Yanka Kupala "Where the eternal offense sang". Masterpieces of national literary art, as well as illustrations to them, are devoted, first of all, to the theme of the Motherland: Powerful artistic images created by Vasily Sharangovich help to tell about Belarus the extraordinary power of the Belarusian word.

The event was attended by Vadzim Hihin, Director General of the National Library of Belarus, Anna Galinskaya, director of the Yanka Kupala State Literary Museum, Irina Matyas, director of the Yakub Kolas State Literary Memorial Museum, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Professor, teacher, painter, member of the Belarusian Union of Artists Vladimir Prokoptsov, chairman of the painting section of the public association "Belarusian Union of Artists" Alexander Grishkevich, First Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Artists, art critic, daughter of Vasily Petrovich Sharangovich Natalia Sharangovich.

"Dreams about Belarus" is a surprisingly subtle, lyrical world of Belarusian landscapes "Narochansky Land", literary plots by Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas, historical events embodied in expressive graphics, as well as portraits of fellow villagers, compatriots and family members, poetic images and personal experiences of the national Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
