Classes on the Book Forms and Materials were held as part of the series The Book Professors’ Club , on October 20 and 21.
In class the kids learned about the main forms of the book, and also materials used for writing. The “Book Professors” got to know the main terms on the topic: a manuscript, papyrus, parchment, a scroll, codex, scriptorium, protograph etc.
The kids learned that the old Chinese books were made on bamboo slats, which were tied together with a rope. One wooden slat was considered the page of the book. To create a scroll book, it was sometimes necessary to have several thousand bamboo plates. Books from bamboo are one of the most important landmarks of Chinese writing and culture in general.
To consolidate the theory, the children together with their parents fulfilled a creative task that allowed them to show individual abilities and creatively look at the object of cognition. The museum lessons’ attendees tried to create "bamboo books" themselves by tying wooden planks together. The task was organized according to the methods of Svetlana Prudovskaya.
