On February 28 the National Library of Belarus organized a program for children at the Minsk International Book Fair.
The classes was organized in the framework of the project On a visit to books and were devoted to beautiful initial letters. The children found them in ancient manuscripts, publications of Francysk Skaryna and modern books presented at the exhibition-fair.
Initials have a long history. Our ancestors placed them already in the Turov and Polotsk Gospels, the oldest manuscripts of Belarusian origin. Tradition has also moved to the printed book. Thus, Francysk Skaryna used the initials in his books published in Prague and Vilna. In Prague publications the initials are used 766 times, there were made more than 100 original boards to print them.
The children learned to see initials, reflected on their purpose, painted them and put them together in the puzzles.
The pupils of secondary school No.128 in Minsk took part at the classes.
