A subject exhibition “The magic world of dolls” dedicated to the history and the art of doll making runs from October 4 to December 13 at the Visual Documents Reading Room 307.

The doll has always played a mysterious and important role in human history. Originally the doll was a visible and tangible image of a deity, and it was used in magic rituals. Then it became the image of a human, its construction changed and parts of its body became mobile.

Independently of the role of the doll in a particular region and in a particular epoch, the notion “doll” is obviously significant, while the doll itself is of many faces. There are theatrical dolls, playing dolls, ritual dolls, souvenir dolls, collection dolls, dolls for processions etc.

The exposition acquaints with the author’s doll as well. Skilled doll-makers А. Vencel, А. Dubrovina, R. Shustov, Т. Bayeva, О. Ermakov, Y. Kim, А. Маrtynov create peculiar and marvelous dolls which are real masterpieces, and the world’s museums and private collectors are proud to have them in their collections.

Humans grow up, but the doll – a toy, an image, a work of art – remains by their side.

Around 50 documents are displayed at the exhibition: albums, books, articles, postcards and reproductions of works of doll-makers.

The exposition is designed for all who is interested in the history and the art of doll making.
