A book exhibition “Science. Cooperation. Development” timed to the World Science Day for Peace and Development runs from 5 November to 1 December in the Documents of international organizations reading room (room 207g).
This Day was established at the 31st session of the UNESCO Conference General 2001 (document 31С/56); since 2002 it has been celebrated annually on 10 November. The idea of the World Science Day for Peace and Development was suggested by participants of the UNESCO World Conference on Science 1999 (Budapest, Hungary). According to conferees, the annual celebration of this Day would give an opportunity to manifest the contribution of science to the achievement of a sustainable development for the sake of peace and would assist to a more efficient cooperation between science and society for resolution of global urgent issues.
The conferees emphasized the proclamation of the World Science Day for Peace and Development would confirm modern society’s devotion to the aims stated by the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge and assist in implementing guidelines of the Science Agenda – the UN Framework for Action.
Fulfilling the goals of the World Science Day for Peace and Development the UNESCO annually works with scientific and public companies, educational institutions and governmental organizations. Open-house days, seminars and round tables, excursions to museums and thematic exhibitions and other events are on the agenda.
The purpose of this Day is the renewal of both national and international obligations in the field of science for peace and development and the intention to emphasize a reasonable use of science for the sake of society. Another aim of the World Science Day for Peace and Development is to inform society on the importance of science and elimination of a gap between science and society.
The human endangers functioning of the planetary system. The existing models of economy and development have led to many social, ecological and economic crisis situations and problems. Science is a source of knowledge for the decision of these issues. However, strictly specialized researches cannot solve the problem. We need an innovative approach covering all the branches of science and technology and connecting new advanced disciplines with traditions and primordial knowledge of different peoples.
The World Science Day for Peace and Development gives an opportunity to confirm over again the force of science for the construction of a better world. Owing to human reason, scientific researches and innovations the mankind can find tomorrow answers to the challenges which seem irresistible today. Science is the best means to support an inclusive and fair development and global stability.
The exhibition presents about 60 documents in Russian, English, German and French languages: books, brochures, periodicals. The most part of the exposition is documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the council of Europe etc).
