On 27 October, the opening of the cultural-educational project "Belarus and the United Nations: history and the present" was held in the Mobile gallery of the National Library of Belarus.

The project is organized by the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus in cooperation with the National Library of Belarus to the United Nations Day (24 October) and consists of photo-and book exhibitions "The United Nations for peace and well-being of all the peoples".

The documents displayed at the book exhibition tell about a multi-faceted work of the UN in the world, but a separate section is dedicated to different aspects of cooperation between Belarus and this international organization. The exhibition contains over 100 documents from the collections of the National Library of Belarus in Russian and English: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the UN, brochures and booklets.

As First Deputy Director for Users Service and Ideology of the National Library of Belarus Elena Dolgopolova has noted at the opening of the exhibition, the Library contains more than 200 000 documents concerning the UN activities. These documents, according to her words, have a regular audience that previously could use only paper documents, but since 2004 editions became available in an electronic format enabling readers to more quickly get the necessary information.

The second one reflects the activities of the UN organizations on the Millennium Development Goals.

Each photograph is a single story of the humanitarian and peacekeeping projects in different countries of the world.

"The United Nations is not just men in smart suits and ties, the UN is all those people that we see in the photos, all those that are round us," – said at the opening Sanak Samarasinha, a representative of the UN in Belarus. He also stressed that Belarus had been continuing to play an active role in the activities of the UN, and therefore he thanked the National Library of Belarus for the fact that its employees cherished documents that might help young people to build a better world in the future.

Both exhibitions will run until 7 November: a photo exposition in the Mobile Gallery (3rd floor), a book exhibition in the Official Documents Division (2nd floor, room 207).
