Autumn is the time to plan and set goals for the next year. The calendar is the first assistant in this endeavour. You can see a rare copy of the 19th century pocket calendar from the collection of miniature publications in the Book Museum, at the anniversary exhibition "5+5+5".

It's 85x50 mm in size. This is a German 1854 pocket calendar bag, published in Munich. In addition to the traditional calendar grid with astronomical data, information on memorable dates for each month is provided.

The pages of the calendar contain colour engravings with quotations illustrating literary works that were extremely popular among German society in the 19th century. The first group focuses on the canonical poem of German literature, Friedrich Schiller's Song of the Bell; the second group illustrates the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe.

The copy has a leather cover with a flap. For convenience and to allow you to take notes, the edition was supplied with a pencil. This is evidenced by the elongated pocket-hole inside the binding. However, our copy is missing a pencil. Although there are notes in plain pencil on the last blank pages of the calendar.

The binding of the miniature edition is embellished with gold embossed floral motifs. The cut of the book is also gold.

Look for the rare 19th century pocket calendar among the five rare books at the exhibition "5+5+5".

The exhibition will run in the Book Museum (room 347) until October 24, 2021.
The end date is subject to change.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the working hours of the Book Museum.
Admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.
