A thematic exhibition timed to the election of deputies to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus is open in the legal information hall (207b), from 4 to 18 November.

The Republic of Belarus has entered the third millennium, following the course of stability and civil accord and having a foundation of strong political, economic and legal traditions. All branches of government are working productively and in close cooperation to maintain peace and order in Belarus.

Legislative power in the Republic of Belarus is exercised by the Parliament – National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus , consisting of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic . The National Assembly is representative, expressing the interests of citizens of the Republic of Belarus. The House of Representatives includes 110 deputies. The election of deputies of the House of Representatives is carried out in accordance with the law on the basis of universal, free, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot. Matters within the competence of the House of Representatives are enshrined in clause 97 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.

The Council of the Republic is a chamber of territorial representation. Eight members of the Council of the Republic are elected from each region and the city of Minsk by secret ballot at meetings of deputies of local Councils of Deputies of each region and the city of Minsk. Eight members of the Council of the Republic are appointed by the President of the Republic of Belarus. Matters within the competence of the House of the Council of the Republic are enshrined in clause 98 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus . The existing quantitative composition of the Parliament of the Republic of Belarus is optimal, which allows the National Assembly, on the one hand, to be a body of a fairly wide representation of citizens, and on the other hand, to be efficient.

Lawmaking, along with control and administrative tasks, is the main function of any Parliament. Laws are adopted by both houses, but the legislative process always begins in the House of Representatives. According to the Belarusian law, any bill, unless otherwise provided by the Constitution, is first considered in the House of Representatives, and then in the Council of the Republic. The main task of the Parliament is to increase the activity of deputies in solving specific legislative problems and adopting laws for economic growth and the welfare of citizens.

The exhibition is designed for political scientists, staff of election commissions, government agencies, teachers, students, and all who are interested in the developmental process in the state.

More than fifty publications are on display: books, brochures, periodicals and theses in the Russian language.

Subject areas:

  • The Parliament of the Republic of Belarus: constitutional and legal aspects
