The jubilee exhibition The Gatherer of the Mysteries of the Past dedicated to the 60th anniversary of birth of the Belarusian folklorist and literary critic Alexey Nenadovets is held in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205) from February 12 to March 14.

Not every European country unlike Belarus has preserved so many legends and traditions, customs and rituals, proverbs and songs till now. Proven and time-tested, polished in the hearts and lips of thousands of nameless masters, the Belarusian folk word has become an inexhaustible source of knowledge and inspiration for many generations.

The Alexei Nenadovets’ monographs open the exhibition, most of which are devoted to the studies of the local mythology (Svyatlo tayamnichaga vogynishcha – The secret fire light, Charounyia Zmei – Magic Snakes, Zamak vedzmy – The Witch’s Castle etc.) reflecting the author’s scientific interests and raising the issues of the worship of ancient Belarusians to plants, animals, stones, pagan gods and spirits. The special attention is paid to quackery and divination in folk culture (Silayu slova. Chornaya I belaya magiya – The Word’s Force. Black and White Magic and other).

The other area of the scientist’s research is the relation between literature, folk art and mythology (on the example of works by Vladimir Korotkevich and Yakub Kolas). The monograph Vladimir Korotkevitch: Nature, Folk art and Creator (Uladzimir Karatkevitch: pryroda, falklor I tvorza) will be especially interesting for visitors.

The works on history and local lore are also showed at the exhibiion

In his works, Alexei Nenadovets refers to personally gathered factual materials, archive, literary and art sources, which makes them even more valuable.

The exposition also includes books composed by Alexey Nenadovets: collections of names of Belarusian regional settlements according to the legends of Brest region (Brestchyna), Minsk region (Minshchyna) etc., the work The legends about lakes of Belarus (Azery Belarusi u legendah I padannah)and others.
