We bring to your attention a virtual project dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the library - “The National Library of Belarus in the Modern Press”, which is planned to be implemented during 2021–2022.

The history of the National Library of Belarus dates back to the 1920s of the last century. It was a time of difficult trials: the country, which had survived the war, devastation, famine, was returning to a peaceful life. Already from the end of 1921, on the basis of the funds of the BSU Library and the Central Belarusian Library, the organization of the United State and University Library began, for which its first own building was also allocated - the Jubilee House on Zakharievskaya Street (now Independence Avenue). The library was there until 1932.

The official date of the founding of the National Library of Belarus (in 1922 - the Belarusian State Library) in accordance with the resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Belarusian SSR "On the establishment of the Belarusian State Library and mandatory registration of all printed works published within the SSRB" is considered September 15, 1922. The date is now celebrated as a nationwide Library Day.

Then no one - even in the wildest dreams - could have imagined that almost a century later, at the beginning of the 21st century, a unique structure would be created, which would become not only a hallmark of our city and the whole country but also a new milestone in the history of the National Library of Belarus.

Based on publications in the press, the new project will acquaint with various aspects of the library's activities, from the construction of a new building to the present. We will tell you about the most significant events in its history, introduce you to exhibition projects, conferences and other events taking place at the library. We are confident that the unique archival materials, memories of the library staff and veterans will be the most vivid reflection of how the treasury of knowledge lived before and how its life has changed significantly now.

The main resource for acquaintance with the life of our organization will be the full-text database "National Library of Belarus in the Press", which today has about 11 thousand various documents.

Follow our news in the heading "To the 100th anniversary of the National Library of Belarus" and you will learn a lot of interesting things about the library and its staff!
