XIII International Karski readings

Other news

On May 12–13, the Grodno State University named after Janka Kupala hosted the XIII International Karski readings “The Salvic world and the national language culture in modern communications”.

The readings were timed to the 155th anniversary of the birth of the academician Jaǔchim Karski.

This year the traditional Karski readings were attended by researchers from various countries: Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Poland and even China. The academician’s great-grandson Aljaksandr Karski arrived with a report from St. Petersburg as a guest of honor

At the plenary session, which was held after the inauguration of the readings, the leading bibliographer of the NLB Book science department Liudmila Silnova presented a report on the private library of Jaǔchim Karski kept in the stocks of the National Library of Belarus Бібліятэка Я. Карскага ў фондзе Нацыянальнай бібліятэкі Беларусі: агульная характарыстыка калекцыі на базе створаных бібліяграфічных запісаў у фармаце BELMARC.

The report was about the private library of the scientist, which is actually kept in the main library of Belarus. Jaǔchim Karski removed his library from Warsaw, where he had long lived and worked as a professor and rector of the University of Warsaw. Later his private book collections received the status of a historical collection. Liudmila Silnova considers this collection by various criteria using the search capabilities of modern electronic technology: chronological range, the geography of the place of publication, language of publication, inscriptions, marginalia etc.

Also as part of the readings interesting discussions and round tables on media linguistics, problems of modern linguistics and discourse analysis practice were held.

Participants of the event were offered a cultural programme: a journey to the village Laša, the homeland of Jaǔchim Karski, and excursions to the university museum and the city of Grodno.
