On 6 February, as part of the XXI Minsk International Book Fair the National Library of Belarus hosted a working meeting on the results of work of the library industry in 2013 and challenges for 2014.
The meeting was attended by more than 20 heads and leading specialists of regional and national libraries, as well as representatives of the government.
At the event, the participants raised the most urgent, sharp, controversial questions concerning the optimization of the library industry; reduction of the library network; development of normative legal space for libraries; effective communication at all levels of libraries and subordinate departments; statistical control of indicators that show libraries’ work in the electronic information environment; integration of public and school libraries in rural areas.
The format of the event allowed library heads to share their experiences about solving tasks and speak about difficulties that have arisen in the process of their implementation.
The result of the meeting was a series of proposals on the further development of cooperation among libraries.
The participants noted the need to:
- to hold a round table on a matter of libraries’ optimization;
- to hold a workshop on collection statistical indicators of libraries’ activity in the electronic information environment (virtual users, virtual visits, etc.);
- to hold, in late February, a meeting of the interdepartmental working group on the matter of actualization of the national standard for library statistics STB 7.20-2000 "Library statistics. General Provisions";
- to make proposals for the creation and actualization of a number of legal acts: Provisions on the Republican Library Board, Regulations on the Book Monuments, Model Regulations to Use the Library;
- to involve representatives of various ministries to discuss matters related to the library industry.
