Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Belarus Mikhail Yezhel.opened the event. "The talent of Taras Shevchenko is immeasurable. It is proved by the fact that 1 384 monuments have been erected in his honour in more than 30 countries. For me personally, Taras Shevchenko is all that forms my attitude to the Ukrainian culture and art," – he said and invited those present to touch the heritage of the great Ukrainian writer.

Mikhail Yezhel gave a calendar with pictures of numerous monuments to the great Kobzar and a towel with a portrait of Taras Shevchenko as a present to Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky. Books which were displayed during the event became the most anticipated gift to the National Library of Belarus.

Roman Motulsky said books were always welcome as a good gift to the Library. "Since the early days of its existence the National Library has been forming the collection of Ukrainian literature. This collection was founded even before the Library’s foundation. That’s why the Ukrainian collection is one of the largest collections in the Library, and it is always updated", said the Director. In his turn he gifted Ambassador of Ukraine a book about the history of Belarusian libraries and gave him a library card to the National Library of Belarus.

After exchanging of the gifts Roman Motulsky impressed guests by reading Shevchenko’s poems from the writer’s lifetime collection of works. Since its publication the edition had traveled to many countries, and now it is kept in the funds of the National Library of Belarus.

At the event there were sounded and performed by young artists many works written by Taras Shevchenko, a glorious son of Ukraine, Thus, the Belarusian singer Olga Satsuk sang a sad song on the poet’s words. Young participants of the national festival-contest "Under the wings of Orion" read Shevchenk’s poems and sang pop and folk songs in the Ukrainian language.

The exhibition of drawings opened during the event. It represents works made by pupils of children’s art schools who were participants of the First Minsk competition named after T. Shevchenko. In the drawings by a palette of paints the children showed not only heroes from Shevchenko’s works, but also conveyed a magical power of nature which had been so lyrically described by the master of artistic expression.

The exhibition of photo materials will tell about perpetuation of memory about Taras Shevchenko in our republic. It should be noted that in Belarus monuments to the Ukrainian writer and pedestals with his bust are installed in Brest, Gomel, Minsk, Mogilev, Slutsk. Many streets and boulevards in provincial and district centers are named in his honour. All this proves that the Belarusian people show great respect and reverence to this person.
