On April 16th, within the bounds of the XI International book lectures, a solemn opening of a book exhibition “The Radziwills and the book” was held in the gallery “Labyrinth”. The exhibition is dedicated to outstanding representatives of one of the celebrated noble families of Europe.


The Radziwills went down to the history of book culture as editors and authors, founders of printing houses and libraries.

The exposition presents books of the ХVІ–XX centuries: original editions of 1566 from the Brest printing-house founded by Radziwill the Black (1515–1565); the XVII–XVIII centuries reeditions of the known Radziwills’ map and the eminent Peregrination of Nicolay Christophe Radziwill the Orphan (1549–1616); the unique book of Frantishka Ursula Radziwill’s (1705–1753) dramas Comedies and Tragedies (the XVIII century); the first edition of the opera Faust (Berlin, 1835) by Antony Heinrich Radziwill (1775–1833); and also works and letters of Maria Dorota Radziwill de Castellane (1840–1915).

Making a welcome speech deputy director of the National Library of Belarus Alexander Susha noted the great contribution of the Radziwills noble family to the development of culture and book heritage of Belarus.

Professor of the faculty of history of Belarusian literature at the Belarusian State University, Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Zhanna Nekrashevich-Korotkaya spoke about writer and the first in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania woman-playwright Frantishka Ursula Radziwill. She reminded of the princess’ role in the expansion of education, formation of the castle library and the restoration of the Nesvizh printing house.

Director of the museum “The Mir Castle Complex”, Candidate of History, Associate Professor Olga Popko noted the importance of museums and libraries teamwork in the sphere of popularization of the Radziwills’ heritage and acquainted the audience with publishing novelties of the museum.

Honored artist of Belarus, winner of the Special Prize of the President of Belarus for cultural and art workers, Professor, art director of the Belarusian Choir at the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet of Belarus Victor Skorobogatov told about the activity of Antony Heinrich Radziwill as an original composer.

Participants of the event got acquainted with the Book Museum exposition. Many of the editions on display have been recently returned to Belarus with the support of public organizations and private persons. The offered exposition runs in the Book Museum from April 16th to May 31st, 2015.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
