A class on "The National Library of Belarus is a Home where Books Live”, as part of On a Visit to Books Project, was held at the library, on January 11. The event was attended by first-year pupils of Minsk secondary school № 137 named after Piotr Masherov.

The children became acquainted with the country’s biggest library and learned how the books’ life was organized. The young guests visited the reading rooms, art galleries and the Book Museum.

Particular attention was paid to primers. The world's first book called Primer (Bukvar) was created and published by Belarusians in the printing house of Vilna Holy Spirit Orthodox Brotherhood in Eve, 1618. Last year, we celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Belarusian Primer.

2019 is also an anniversary for educational books, which had played an important role in the history of East Slavic peoples:

445 years ago, Ivan Fedorov, the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian book-printer and educator, published the ABC-Book (Azbuka);

340 years ago, Simeon of Polotsk, who did much for the expansion of education in Belarus and Russia, issued his Primer;

100 years ago, the Belarusian teacher, Alexandra Smolich, compiled the grammar book Zorka;

50 years ago, the Primer of Anatoly Klyshko appeared. He elaborated his own method of teaching reading and writing, which suggests the place of honor in the world’s book publishing.

During class time, Alexander Susha, Candidate of Cultural Studies, Deputy Director for Research and Publishing, told the children interesting stories about the primers.

The classes were organized on the initiative of Natalia Amyalyanik, a primary school teacher and winner of Minsk City Executive Committee Award 2010 in nomination "Effective management as the main resource to improve the quality of education" and regional stage of the Republican contest of professional skills "The Capital’s Teacher for the Capital's Education" 2016 in nomination «Getting started".

All materials are prepared by the Bibliology Research Department.
