On 22nd May, on the threshold of the 19th International Cyril and Methodius Lectures, the round table “The Polotsk Gospel, the first book of Belarusian people” was held in the National Library of Belarus.


The event was dedicated to the unique monument of the Slavic written language – the Polotsk Gospel of the late 11th – early 13th centuries.

The round table meeting started with the performance of the vocal ensemble Blagovets which gave a solemn mood to the event. Deputy Director of the National Library of Belarus for research work and publishing activity Alexander Susha, Academician-Secretary of the Humanities and Arts Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Kovalenya, executive director of the Belarusian Exarchate Publishing House Vladimir Grozov, and Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Anatoly Lazarevich gave welcoming speeches.

The facsimile edition of the Polotsk Gospel created by common efforts of representatives of national libraries of Belarus and Russia, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Exarchate Publishing House was presented at the round table meeting. The facsimile allowed to recreate as much as possible authentically the appearance and the original structure of this book monument, and to return it to the cultural space of Belarus.

Creators of the facsimile edition participated in the event. For the first time their unique experience was presented to both scientific community and wide public. Head of the Rare books department of the Russian National Library Nikolai Nikolayev presented his report online. Also at the event spoke: specialists of the Institute of Language and Literature named after Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Deputy Director Sergey Garanin, Head of department Natalia Polishchuk, senior researchers Irina Budko and Elvira Yermolenko and leading researcher Alexander Brazgunov; representative of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Head of department Alexander Grusha; representative of the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Head of the Center for historical, philosophical and comparative researches Valery Yevorovsky; photo artist Georgiy Likhtorovich and others.

The event reflected the modern achievements of scientists in the field of research of the valuable hand-written monument of Belarus and also outlined the perspectives of a further work on research, return and promotion of the book heritage of Belarus.

Students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National library

On April 18, the students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National Library of Belarus as part of the environmental education and upbringing program. They got acquainted with the thematic book exhibition "Water is a wonderful gift of Nature" dedicated to World Water Day. The exposition is presented in the documents of international organizations reading room (room 207 g).
