On 7 December, at the National Library of Belarus took place the seminar-dialogue “The paper document restoration in libraries and archives”.
The event gathered more than 40 specialists of Belarusian republican and university libraries, and the Central laboratory of microfilming and document restoration of the National Archival Collection of the Republic of Belarus.
Reports delivered by leading specialists of the National Library of Belarus (Z.S. Kovalenko, head of Restoration and conservation division, G.V. Kireeva, head of Bibliology division, D.A. Muratova, head of disinfection section, E.V. Sinelnikova, microbiologist at disinfection section) and I.V. Silina, director of the Central laboratory of microfilming and document restoration of the National Archival Collection of the Republic of Belarus, revealed theoretical and practical questions of microbiological study, disinfection and restoration of paper documents.
The questions of microbiological security of stored paper documents, methods of document restoration and safety of documents on display were considered.
A particular attention was paid to the following:
- the urgency of the issue of biological safety of paper documents;
- the necessity to study and apply new technologies to restoration;
- the expediency of holding trainings on document restoration and conservation ;
- the expediency of creating a permanent forum on restoration and a corresponding professional union.
Within the framework of the seminar-dialogue participants had an opportunity to visit the Restoration and conservation division, learn how the restoration machine operated and become familiar with the measures for physical safety of documents.
