The National Library of Belarus hosted a round table “Modern Belarusians, a Reading Nation” on November 3.
Mr Ihar Buzouski, Deputy Minister of Information of the Republic of Belarus, Ms Aksana Knizhnikava, Director General of the National Library of Belarus, Mr Mikalaj Mysliviec, Director of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Mr Dzmitry Biazniuk, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus, Mr Ivan Savierchanka, Director of the Janka Kupala branch of the NAS of Belarus, Mr Jury Khackievich, Deputy Director of "Harvest" Publishing House and other invited guests took part in the round table.
The staff of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus presented the results of the sociological study "On reading preferences of Belarusians". Almost 50% of those surveyed regularly pick up a book (daily or several times a week), and only 15% do not read at all. A curious fact is that Belarusians are most attracted to fiction, popular science and educational literature. When choosing a book, readers consider the genre, the opinion of their friends and family, and the fame of the author and the literary work.
At the event, experts discussed the preferences of readers of different ages, the state of domestic publishing, the increase in the number of publishers, the transition to a digital environment, the formation of values in readers and trends in contemporary culture.
Representatives of the "Harvest" Publishing House and the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have donated children's and scientific literature which will be added to the collections of the National Library of Belarus.
The event was organized by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus.
