The National Library of Belarus has prepared a set of postcards “The Gruenwald Battle in Images: materials from the collections of the National Library of Belarus” timed to the 600th anniversary of the victory in the Gruenwald Field (July 15th, 1410).


The Gruenwald Battle of combined forces of the Polish Kingdom and the Great Duchy of Lithuania over Teutonic knights on July 15th, 1410, had become one the crucial events in the national and European medieval history and had predetermined fates of many countries and peoples. Warriors from the territory of modern Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Russia and Czechia, and also Tartar fighters battled against crusaders of the Teutonic Order. The Gruenwald Battle had been covered by all European chronicles of the ХV–XVI centuries, and in future it became the subject matter for historians and literati of different countries. For centuries, the Gruenwald Battle has been inspiration for masters of fine arts, and today many artists still dedicate their works to it.

The set of postcards represents the events of the past epoch through the eyes of famous and unknown artists. The set includes 16 postcards with engravings from chronicles and reproductions of epic paintings of the ХІХ – early ХХ centuries by Polish artists Y. Mateyko and Y. and V. Kossok, and also Czech artist A. Mukha. The portrait gallery is represented by images of three main historical persons: Grand Duke of Lithuania Vitaut, King of Poland Yagayla and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order Ulrich von Jungingen. Besides, there are some interesting illustrations from fiction and historical books.

The edition is designed for all who is interested in the Belarusian and world history and culture.

The set of postcards is available by subscription and at the booth located in the National Library of Belarus, on the first floor next the central entrance. Cost: 10 120 BYR.

On July 8th at the gallery “Labyrinth” of the National Library of Belarus took place the opening ceremony of the historical-cultural project “Gruenwald-600”. Within the framework of the event, book by Yuri Bokhan “Warriors of the Gruenwald Battle” and a set of postcards “The Gruenwald Battle in Images: materials from the collections of the National Library of Belarus” were presented.

Students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National library

On April 18, the students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National Library of Belarus as part of the environmental education and upbringing program. They got acquainted with the thematic book exhibition "Water is a wonderful gift of Nature" dedicated to World Water Day. The exposition is presented in the documents of international organizations reading room (room 207 g).
