The roundtable discussion, Spiritual Education Through the Activities of Libraries: on the 500th Founding Anniversary of the Monastery of the Assumption in Zhirovichi, took place on February 12 at the State Institution, Centralized System of Children's Libraries of the Minsk City.

Belarus marks the 550th anniversary of the appearance of the Zhirovichi Icon of the Mother of God and the 500th founding anniversary of the Monastery of the Assumption in Zhirovichi in 2020. Both are significant events for the cultural life of the country. The Monastery of the Assumption in Zhirovichi has a checkered past, the monastery has been closely connected with the formation and development of Belarus for five centuries. Today it is one of the main centers of the Orthodox religion for the Belarusian people, and is also one of the largest architectural ensembles of the country and its most famous sightseeing attractions. The Zhirovichi Icon of the Mother of God is a special historical and cultural phenomenon and is included in the list of the 100 most significant Orthodox shrines in the world. The Holy Assumption Monastery and the Zhirovichi Icon of the Mother of God are the most important spiritual symbols of the Belarusian people.

The importance of native holy shrines for patriotic and moral education of the younger generation, the role of libraries in spiritual education through books and reading, their influence on strengthening family foundations, the cultivation of good citizenship and patriotism, these and a number of other issues were discussed during the round table at the Central Children's Library named after N. Ostrovsky.

The event was attended by the heads and specialists of libraries, the representatives of publishing houses of the republic and institutions of the Belarusian Orthodox Church.

Ms Olga Rynkevich, the Chief Librarian of the Bibliology Research Department, took part in the roundtable discussion on behalf of the National Library with the report Organization of the Republican Contest, Library - the Center of Spiritual Education and Upbringing as an Effective Form of Advanced Training for Librarians of the Republic.
