The Scientific and practical seminar "Sources on Genealogy in Belarusian Archives and Libraries" was held in the National Library, on 27 March.

The event was organized by the National Library of Belarus and the National Historical Archives of Belarus. The seminar heard extensive reports, designed, first of all, for those compiling genealogy. Denis Liseichikov, Ph.D., deputy director of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, spoke about the increasing interest in genealogy and how the search for ancestors was conducted in Belarus.

Vadim Vrublevsky, Ph.D., head of the case studies and exhibition activity section, Document and Information Use Department, National Historical Archives of Belarus, presented a report on genealogy education in Belarus at the present stage. He also introduced the audience to the activities of the public association Radavod (Pedigree) at the History Department of Belarusian State University, which unites Belarusian researchers of genealogy. Yevgeny Glinski, head of the editorial and publishing sector, Department of the Document Publishing Department, National Historical Archives of Belarus, spoke about the falsification of genealogical documents and how to detect a fake.

Anatoly Steburako, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Bibliology Research Department, National Library of Belarus, took the floor at the end of the seminar. His message had a very practical purpose – to promote handwritten sources in the National Library’s collections. Though little known, they can be used to search for ancestors. In addition, each participant received a list of metric books from the collection of the country's main library.

The event ended with a visit to a thematic exhibition at the reading room of manuscripts, incunabula and rare books. The most interesting metric books of the 18th – 20th centuries were on display.
