The 7th International Congress “Library as a Phenomenon of Culture” took place at the National Library of Belarus on October 21-22.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus.

This year's congress events were held both in the library building and online.

The participants were representatives from Belarus, Germany, Russia, France and Ukraine. The participants were leading specialists of libraries, research organizations, educational institutions, developers and manufacturers of software, hardware and information products, literary scholars and writers.

The main topic this year was "Local Lore and Regional Studies for the Cultural Diversity Preservation".

The two-day program of the event was rich and interesting: the library hosted plenary and breakout sessions, round tables, seminars, a virtual presentation platform and a master class.

The main topics for discussion were the history and culture of countries, regions, localities as a direction of modern research; organization of regional studies of libraries, its normative and methodological support; local history bibliographic resources and projects; electronic information resources on local history, regional studies; popularization of local history and regional knowledge, museums, archives; local history content in the Internet space; modern publishing products in the preservation and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of countries and regions.

An award ceremony was held for the winners of the 28th Republican competition "Library - Center of National Culture" within the framework of the opening ceremony.

The congress invited producers of traditional literature and electronic resources with the exhibition within the framework of the forum. A meeting of the Council of Libraries of Belarus for Information Interaction was held, as well as a presentation of a unique online encyclopedia “Belarus in Persons and Events”. The "Fiction as a path to each other" round table took place at the congress. The round table was organized in cooperation with the publishing house "Zvyazda". Writers and authors attended the event as well as specialists from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

The participants summed up the results of the two-day work of the forum, discussed the issues raised at the breakout sessions, paid considerable attention to the prospects for the development of corporate and informational interaction, and the preservation of documentary heritage in the end of the congress.

The results of the 7th International Congress "Library as a Cultural Phenomenon" will further strengthen international cooperation between institutions of culture, education and science, the development of local history activities, the formation of information culture and will become a significant contribution to the development of information resources of libraries.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
