On March 20 Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky donated about 275 publications of fiction, encyclopedic, reference, popular science, educational and other literature to libraries of the Orsha centralized library system in the framework of the charity campaign “Reading as Information and Knowledge Space”.
Today, the Orsha centralized library system includes 36 libraries, 23 of them are located in the countryside. Almost every third resident of Orsha and Orsha district uses the services of public libraries.
There are stored about 730 thousand copies in the funds of the libraries of the Orsha district. In 2018, the number of new acquisitions to the libraries in the region account for 16.5 thousand copies. This amount is clearly not enough for high-quality renewal of collections.
According to the regulations of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the public library fund must be fully updated every 10 years.
If the replenishment of library funds in the Orsha district will continue at the same pace, then it can only be fully renewed in 40–45 years. Therefore, the publications transmitted in the framework of the “Reading is a space of information and knowledge” campaign will be a kind of contribution of all its participants to the renewal of library funds.
The National Library of Belarus expresses gratitude for everyone joined the campaign. We invite all those who are not indifferent to join the charity campaign in order to unite our efforts to increase and contribute to a good deed of nurturing a love for the book and reading, expanding knowledge, and enhancing the intellectual potential of the young generation.
