The online meeting “Libraries as Witnesses of the Victory: How to Make New Generation Think of the Victory as their Own” took place on May 15, 2020. The representatives of the national libraries of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Uzbekistan took part in the meeting.

The meeting was dedicated to the presentation of the open-access resource "Libraries as Witnesses of the Victory". The resource created by the M.I. Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature in collaboration with the partner libraries of the CIS on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory.

Each of the participating libraries has done a great job of creating witness stories about the Victory meeting since February. The resource contains more than 15 stories about human destinies, heroism, the joyful moment of Victory, for which friendly peoples valiantly fought. The project united 6 countries of the CIS and the SCO.

Mr Roman Motulsky, Director General of the National Library of Belarus, welcome his colleagues virtually, he thanked the “foreigner” for the good idea and initiative in holding this event, emphasized the important role of international cooperation of the CIS countries in the formation of collective historical memory. “I am pleased with this meeting. Victory Day is a great date and it is especially honoured in Belarus. We started preparations for the anniversary date a long time ago, especially since last year we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders. We have prepared a set of measures and activities, we have already realized some of them, and the rest will be done a little later, taking into account the situation. I invite everyone to follow the virtual projects dedicated to the special date on the library portal”, said Mr Roman Motulsky.

There are also the stories about the legendary employees of our library on the pages of the project “Libraries as Witnesses of the Victory”. Iosif Simanowski, Nina VatatziIgor Zholudev are among them. Ms Irina Kuketa, Chief Librarian of the Bibliology Research Department, told about their fate during her speech. The project tells about the great events of that time, shows the heroism of individual people, conveys the atmosphere of glee and joy of Victory, according to Irina.

The online meeting lasted more than two hours live and aroused keen interest among its participants. The participants were able to discuss the importance of international cooperation, tell about their material heroes, how the choice was made, how the work went, share interesting discoveries and memorable moments, thanks to the online meeting.

The created resource perfectly illustrates the joint contribution of the representatives of different countries to the common Victory. The project “Libraries as Witnesses of the Victory” united the countries in a common memory of the heroic feat of the older generation, which we will keep forever. Further work will begin in the near future to fill and promote the project.
