Viktor Pshibytko held an online master class "Using Free Software to Create Local Lore Resources of Libraries" within the framework of the 7th International Congress "Library as a Cultural Phenomenon" on October 22.
The formation of the EIR of local lore studies is an important part of library activities and a promising form of dissemination and preservation of the social memory of the region.
One of the pressing questions is the choice of the software platform. The use of proprietary application software, specially developed for the formation of electronic resources, is expensive both in terms of development and further maintenance.
World experience shows that the use of free software is an alternative and low-cost option in providing remote access to library collections. This development method is currently the most popular.
The participants of the master class (more than 150 specialists from 40 libraries of Belarus) got acquainted with three free platforms that can be used to create local history electronic information resources. The possibilities of the free software “Omeka” were demonstrated by the example of the online resource of the National Library of Belarus “Manuscripts of modern Belarusian authors from the funds of the National Library of Belarus”.
