On 18 June, a solemn ceremony of the donation of the facsimile edition Knіzhnaya spadchyna Frantsyska Skaryny (The Book Heritage of Skaryna) to representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in the Republic of Belarus and libraries of Minsk Region was held in the Library.
The National Library of Belarus together with the BelVeb Bank has realized the first part of a nationwide project on the release of the first five volumes of the complete facsimile edition of Francysk Skaryna’s works. It is planned to realize the project for 2013–2017. This initiative is timed to the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book printing. For this period it is planned to release 25 books in 20 volumes – the complete repertoire of the works published by F. Skaryna in Prague and Vilno.
The solemn event began with the speech of Minister of Culture of the Republic of Belarus Boris Svetlov. He thanked for the successful implementation of the project and gave the first five volumes of the edition to the representatives of foreign diplomatic missions related to the fate of the first Belarusian printer.
At the event Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Belarus Milan Eckert stressed the importance of this project. He also brought to notice to the period when Skaryna had lived and worked in Prague. Mr. Ambassador expressed his gratitude to the National Library of Belarus and the BelVEB Bank for the successful implementation of the project.
Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky congratulated all whose who presented on the significant achievement in the life of our country and expressed hope that the facsimile reproduction of the first Belarusian printer’s works would acquaint the general public with one of the most valuable treasures of the Belarusian book culture. The five-volume facsimile edition of The Book Heritage of Skaryna was donated to libraries of all districts of Minsk Region.
The facsimile edition was also given to members of the writing team and individuals whose fruitful work had helped to realize the project: Deputy Director for Research and Publishing Activitiesof the National Library of Belarus Alies Susha, Head of Bibliology Division Galina Kireeva, chief researcher worker of the Institute of History of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Georgy Galenchenko, leading research worker of the Center of the Belarusian culture, language and literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Brazgunov.
The facsimile edition with maximum fullness book recreates Skaryna’s books. They preserve the structure, content, fonts and features of originals, reflect all traits which have appeared for the 500- year existence.
The facsimile edition of the first Belarusian printer is of a great importance for our cultural heritage and an important resource of information for historical, philosophical, cultural and book studies.
