From 18 to 26 June, more than a hundred librarians and library lovers from 20 countries took part in a regular international cycling event.
One of the participants of the bicycle tour Amsterdam–Brussels was a worker of the National Library of Belarus Anastasia Zharskaya.
Cycling for libraries is aimed to provide an informal environment for professional communication and to attract public attention to library issues.
Its main organizers are the Finnish librarians, headed by Jukka Penanenom and Massa Oyalom, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Education in Finland.
The current nine-day bicycle ride in furtherance of libraries began in Amsterdam and ended in Brussels. The participants passed almost 500 km. They visited about 20 libraries. Among them there were the largest public libraries in Amsterdam, Delft, Bruges and Brussels, university libraries in Delft and Gönc, the library of the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam and the European Parliament in Brussels, as well as a number of libraries in small towns.
Besides, the cyclists had a chance to take part in a variety of seminars and presentations, cultural events, official meetings and informal discussions that took place under the sign of librarianship and information technology.
During the trip, all the participants met not only with colleagues and members of the local library community, but with journalists of newspapers and TV channels and with representatives of well-known international library organizations such as IFLA, EBLIDA and FOBID.
Visiting the Dutch, Belgian and European parliaments and parliamentarians during which the participants discussed relevant library issues became one of the most significant events.
