On 23–24 October 2013, the National Library of Belarus hosted the International congress “The library as a cultural phenomenon” arranged by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus.
The International congress “The library as a cultural phenomenon” is held annually for the exchange of professional experience and the development of joint resolution of urgent issues of librarianship. This year within the framework of the Congress a conference “Information society and society of knowledge: role and place of libraries” was held and the exhibition “Electronic information resources and services” was first arranged.
Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky opened the forum. Minister of Culture of the Republic of Belarus Boris Svetlov, Chairman of the Chamber of Representatives Standing Commission of the National Assembly for Education, Culture and Science of the Republic of Belarus Gennady Palchik, Director of the National Center of Legal Information of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Gaev and Deputy Director of Tregross Company Alexander Shimko delivered welcome speeches.
Leading specialists of libraries, publishing houses, educational and research institutions, and also manufacturers of computer software, hardware and information products met at plenary and section sessions, round tables, discussion and presentation platforms to consider different aspects of library activities against the background of information society, engineering and technological innovations, problems of library human resources and other urgent issues.
During the Congress the National Library of Belarus hosted the exhibition arranged by The Ministry of Culture of Belarus, the National Library of Belarus, the Administration of the Belarusian Hi-Tech Park, the National Center of Legal Information of the Republic of Belarus and Tregross Company. About 20 companies participating in the exhibition presented their electronic information resources, computer software and equipment for the development of information search systems and services, and also electronic collections and libraries.
The two-day forum gathered about 400 delegates from 15 countries: Belarus, Belgium, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Czechia, Switzerland and Sweden.
