On 28–30 August, 2013, the National Library of Belarus hosted the 42nd International Conference ABDOS “Towards a new self-conception – Libraries as cultural and social centres”
The event was arranged by the the Association of Libraries and Documentation Units for Research on Eastern, East Central and South Eastern Europe (ABDOS) which activities are focused on the development of libraries as information systems and both printed and electronic media, as well as on the promotion of contacts between specialists in different subject areas (librarians, information specialists, science experts etc). The Association’s major task is also the development of the lifelong education system.

The ABDOS annual conferences raise most urgent questions of cultural cooperation between different countries, improvement of legal activity of libraries, new approaches in the development of professional training etc.
The 42nd conference gathered more than 60 delegates from Germany, Serbia, Switzerland, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus: directors and leading specialists of libraries, educational and research institutions, non-governmental organizations, and also representatives of the executive branch. During three days discussions were focused on the role and tasks of modern libraries in the city and in the village, the urgent issues of the culture of reading, functioning of electronic libraries, and the latest trends in library science and bibliology.
